When she first discussed the trust in her name, she told Bill Shepherd, a Portland attorney, that she wanted to help people with physical disabilities. She wanted to do this because one of her favorite people was her mechanic who had one arm. It seems now that she was celebrating the fact that he had overcome a significant obstacle in order to remain independent, productive and proud. Her wish was to designate a portion of her wealth so that other people, up against similar challenges, would gain the same confidence he had.
